The snowboard pioneer
Although one can not say that Burton founder Jake Carpenter invented snowboarding itself when he manufactured his first snowboard prototype in 1977 because people probably have always been sliding down slopes on some kind of boards. Nevertheless Carpenter is considered one of the pioneers of modern snowboarding. Carpenter constructed his first snowboards out of wood. Only in the 1980's materials and expertise from skiing were introduced into the manufacturing of snowboards. During the 1980's and 1990's snowboarding became a mass phenomenon and Burton played a significant role in that achievement and still is one of the mayor players in the sport.
