What should winter shoes offer?
When the weather in autumn slowly becomes more and more uncomfortable and wetness and cold increase, then it's time for a pair of good winter shoes. However, these should meet some important criteria so that they do exactly what they are supposed to. The most important thing about winter shoes is that they are lined. Without an insulation layer in the shoe, you can't really talk about a winter shoe, because cold feet are pre-programmed. Another "must" is a sturdy sole with a good tread - at least for regions where it sometimes snows and freezes. In addition, a good winter shoe should at least be water-repellent, ideally even waterproof. Which winter shoe is the right one?
With winter shoes and winter boots, just as with winter jackets or outdoor clothing, there is a large selection of different types. The search for the right winter shoe is not always easy. Winter shoe or winter boot?
The first decision to make in the search for the perfect winter shoe: Should it be a shoe with a high or low shaft? Both types have their advantages and disadvantages. If you are traveling in a climate where it snows often and abundantly, a winter boot with a high shaft is almost indispensable. This is because all low shaft shoes will have snow in them sooner or later. Moreover, with low shaft shoes, your pant legs are quickly in contact with the snow and the cold creeps up your legs - not a nice feeling at -15 degrees. Therefore, in snowy climates, we definitely advise the high shoe or boot. However, winter shoes with a low shaft also have their advantages. In regions with little snow, such a shoe can score - with low weight and slightly higher comfort.
Water-repellent or waterproof winter shoes?
A small but important difference: While a water-repellent shoe does let moisture into the inside of the shoe at some point, a waterproof shoe is actually 100% waterproof. The decision whether it should be a water-repellent or waterproof shoe should again depend on the surrounding climate and your own behavior. Am I out and about a lot in the wet? Do I take long walks in the snow? Then the shoe should be waterproof. For short excursions in wet and snow and in everyday life, a water-repellent shoe is definitely enough, if you do not have to wade through deep snow every day.
Winter shoes made of leather or synthetic?
Just like hiking boots, winter shoes are available in both leather and synthetic versions, with each upper material again bringing its own advantages and disadvantages. A winter shoe made of leather has a pleasant foot climate and a long life due to the natural material. However, leather also has some disadvantages in winter temperatures: It can only be made waterproof with a surface treatment (usually wax). When wet, the leather soaks up and dries only slowly. In other words, a winter shoe made of leather that has become wet cannot be used again until it has dried completely. The great advantage of winter shoes made of synthetic material is that these shoes can be one hundred percent waterproof thanks to a membrane - for example, Gore-Tex. This membrane is breathable, which provides a good foot climate. In addition, synthetic shoes dry much faster than leather shoes and are generally insensitive to moisture. The disadvantage of synthetic winter shoes is that they are less durable than leather shoes.
